In Ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands, believing that flowers signify new beginnings, fidelity and hope of fertility. In the Middle Ages, strong-smelling herbs and spices were thought to ward off and drive away evil spirits, bad luck, ill health and help mask the smell of body odor.

The history of the boutonniere dates back to the 16th century. "Boutonniere" is a French word meaning "Buttonhole Flower"

In Queen Victoria's day. Victoria had an attention for detail and lavish staging, especially flower symbolism. She heaped her ceremony with cut and blooming flowers, and wore a crown of orange blossoms (a symbol of chastity) in her hair, sparking a craze for bridal flower crowns.

Tossing the bouquet is a tradition that stems from England. Women used to try to rip pieces of the bride's dress and flowers in order to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away.
